Why Is My Terrarium Dying? Common Problems and Solutions

You built a little glass garden, it looked perfect for a fortnight, and now the leaves are going soft, brown, or worryingly translucent. If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company. At our terrarium workshops we hear the same story on repeat: someone follows every instruction, gives the plant plenty of care and attention, and watches it fall apart anyway.

The reason is usually the opposite of what people expect. Most terrariums don’t die from neglect. They die from too much water and too much fussing. A closed terrarium is a small sealed ecosystem that mostly runs itself, and once you understand how it actually behaves, the fixes are simple.

Singapore adds a few local quirks to the picture. Our outdoor air is warm and humid, which sounds ideal, but most of us keep our plants indoors under aircon, next to windows that either blast harsh afternoon sun or barely get any light at all. Those conditions shape almost every problem below.

Overwatering: the problem behind most dead terrariums

A closed terrarium recycles its own water. Moisture evaporates from the soil and leaves, collects on the glass, and drips back down. In a healthy jar you might not need to add water for weeks, sometimes months. The trouble starts when people treat it like a normal potted plant and water it every few days out of habit.

What waterlogging looks like: stems turn mushy and translucent near the base, leaves yellow and drop, and there’s a visible layer of water sitting at the bottom of the container. Once roots sit in standing water, they rot, and the plant can’t recover no matter how much light you give it.

The fix is to dry it out, not to intervene more. Take the lid off for a day or two and let the excess moisture escape. If the substrate is soaked, tip the terrarium gently to one side and let water pool away from the roots, or dab it out with a tissue. Then leave it alone. That last part is the hardest for most people.

Learning to read the condensation on the glass

Your terrarium tells you how it’s doing every morning, and the message is written on the inside of the glass.

A light mist that forms overnight and clears within an hour or two of daylight is exactly what you want. That’s the water cycle working. Heavy fog that never lifts, with big droplets running down the sides all day, means there’s too much moisture, too much heat, or both. Open the lid until the glass clears up during the day, then close it again.

The opposite is also a warning. If the glass stays bone dry for days and the soil looks pale and crumbly, the terrarium is too dry, and this is one of the rare times you actually should add a little water. A few mist sprays is usually enough. You’re aiming for that gentle morning mist, not a rainforest downpour on the inside of the jar.

Light problems that come with Singapore homes

Light is where a lot of terrariums quietly fail, and our living spaces make it tricky.

Put a closed glass container in direct afternoon sun, especially against a west-facing HDB window, and it turns into an oven. The glass traps heat, temperatures spike, and the plants inside cook within a day. People come to us convinced they underwatered, when really the terrarium got baked on a sunny sill.

The reverse happens in dim interiors. Plants stretched out with long gaps between pale, floppy leaves are reaching for light they aren’t getting. That stretching is called etiolation, and it’s the plant telling you it’s starving for brightness.

Bright but indirect light is the sweet spot. A spot a metre or so back from a window that gets gentle morning sun works well. If your flat is genuinely dark, a small LED light on a timer solves the problem cheaply and looks fine on a shelf.

When mould and pests show up

Warmth and constant humidity are lovely for plants, and unfortunately just as lovely for mould and fungus gnats. This is one of the more common questions we get in Singapore, where the ambient humidity gives these problems a head start.

Here’s how to deal with the usual offenders:

  • White fuzzy mould on soil or wood: scoop out the affected patch with a spoon and improve airflow by leaving the lid off for a day. A single small piece of activated charcoal in the substrate helps keep it from coming back.
  • Dead or rotting leaves: remove them the moment you spot them. Decaying plant matter is what mould feeds on, so a quick prune every couple of weeks prevents most outbreaks.
  • Fungus gnats (tiny flies hovering around the jar): these breed in wet soil, so letting the top layer dry out breaks their cycle. A yellow sticky trap nearby catches the adults.
  • Green algae on the glass: usually a sign of too much light plus too much moisture. Wipe the inside of the glass and move the terrarium slightly away from strong light.

If mold keeps returning no matter what you do, the terrarium is almost always too wet or too warm underneath. Fix the moisture and the mould tends to sort itself out.

You may have simply picked the wrong plants

A surprising number of “dying” terrariums were never going to survive the pairing they were built with. The classic mistake is putting succulents or cacti inside a closed jar. Those plants want dry air and infrequent watering, so sealing them into a humid box is a slow drowning.

Match the plant to the type of terrarium:

  • Closed terrariums suit humidity-loving plants like fittonia (nerve plant), ferns, moss, and peperomia. These enjoy the trapped moisture and stay small.
  • Open terrariums are the right home for succulents, cacti, and air plants, which need airflow and drier conditions.

Mixing the two rarely ends well. If your closed terrarium has a succulent slowly turning to mush in the corner, that’s not a care failure. It’s a casting error, and moving that plant to an open dish is the real solution.

The drainage layer people skip

When you make a terrarium at home without guidance, the drainage layer is the step that quietly gets left out, and it causes trouble months later. Small pebbles or leca clay balls at the bottom give excess water somewhere to collect, away from the roots. A thin layer of activated charcoal above that keeps the whole thing fresh and cuts down on odour and mould.

Without those layers, water has nowhere to go. It pools directly around the roots, and even careful watering leads to rot over time. If your terrarium is soil straight onto glass and it keeps struggling despite everything else being right, the missing drainage layer is very likely the culprit. Rebuilding it properly is more reliable than trying to nurse a waterlogged one back to health.

A quick way to diagnose yours

When a terrarium looks unwell, run through the likely causes in order rather than guessing. Mushy, translucent, yellowing growth points to too much water. Pale, stretched, leggy growth points to too little light. Crispy, browning edges usually mean it’s too hot or too dry, often from direct sun or aircon blowing right on it. Fuzzy patches and flies mean excess moisture and rotting debris. And a single plant dying while the rest thrive usually means that one plant was the wrong choice for the setup.

Most of the time you’re not dealing with a mysterious illness. You’re dealing with water, light, or heat that has drifted out of balance, and each of those is easy to nudge back.

Final thoughts

The thing to hold onto is that a terrarium wants to be left mostly alone. Once it’s built correctly, with the right plants and proper layers, your job is closer to observing than gardening. Watch the condensation each morning, remove the odd dead leaf, keep it out of harsh sun, and resist the urge to water it on a schedule. That’s genuinely most of the work.
