Why Does Melt-and-Pour Soap Sweat? Causes and Prevention Tips

You unmould a batch of soap at night, go to bed pleased with yourself, and by morning the bars are covered in tiny beads of liquid. They look like they’ve been crying. Nothing smells off, the colour is fine, but there’s a slick, damp film sitting on every surface, and if there’s a label on it, the label is now curling at the edges.

If you make melt-and-pour soap in Singapore, you’ve almost certainly met this. It’s one of the first questions we get at our workshops, usually from someone holding up a bar and asking if they’ve ruined it. They haven’t. But the sweating is real, it’s annoying, and if you’re selling soap or gifting it, it can make a perfectly good bar look like a factory reject. Here’s what’s actually happening and how to keep it from happening to you.

What “sweating” actually is

The droplets on your soap aren’t oil, and they aren’t a sign the soap has gone bad. They’re mostly water, pulled straight out of the air.

Melt-and-pour bases are loaded with glycerin. Glycerin is what gives these bases their clarity and that soft, gentle feel on the skin, and it’s a big part of why beginners love working with them. The catch is that glycerin is hygroscopic, meaning it grabs onto water. Leave a glycerin-rich bar exposed to humid air and the glycerin near the surface starts drawing in moisture until it beads up. Soapmakers call it glycerin dew. The soap is doing exactly what glycerin does. It’s just doing it in your kitchen instead of on your skin.

So sweating isn’t a fault in your recipe or your technique. It’s a property of the material meeting the environment. And in Singapore, the environment is about as challenging as it gets.

Why Singapore makes it so much worse

Relative humidity here sits high all year. On a lot of days it hovers around 80 percent, and after rain it climbs higher. There’s no dry season to give your soap a break. A soapmaker in a cooler, drier climate might see mild sweating a few weeks a year. Here, it’s the default condition unless you do something about it.

Temperature swings make it worse. Think about how you actually live and work in Singapore. You keep your soap in an air-conditioned room, then carry it out to a warm hallway or a hot car. The cold surface of the bar meets warm, moist air and moisture condenses on it, the same way a cold drink sweats on a table. Every time your soap crosses that temperature line, it collects a little more water.

Storage habits stack on top of that. Bars left uncovered on a curing rack, a batch sitting in an open box near a window, soap displayed at a weekend market with no wrapping, all of these give the glycerin hours of direct contact with damp air. By the time you notice, the surface is already wet.

The main causes, in plain terms

When a bar sweats, it’s usually one or more of these at work:

  • High glycerin content in the base. Clear bases tend to sweat more than opaque or white ones because they carry more glycerin. If you’re using an ultra-clear or “extra transparent” base, expect more dew.
  • Bare, unwrapped soap. Any bar left open to the air will pull in moisture. Wrapping is the single biggest lever you have.
  • Humid storage or work spaces. A room without air-conditioning or a dehumidifier is a wet environment, and your soap treats it like a drink of water.
  • Temperature changes. Moving soap between cold and warm spaces invites condensation on top of the glycerin dew.
  • Too much added liquid. Extra fragrance oil, watery colourants, aloe, milk, or other add-ins raise the water and humectant load, which gives the soap more to release.

Notice that most of these are about the environment and handling, not the recipe. That’s good news, because it means you can fix most of it with a few changes to how you store and wrap, no reformulating required.

How to stop your soap from sweating

The goal is simple: keep humid air off the soap. Do that and the sweating mostly disappears.

  • Wrap each bar tightly, and wrap it soon. Shrink wrap, cling film, or clear soap bags all work. Press the film against the surface so there’s little air trapped inside. Do this as soon as the bar is fully cooled and hard.
  • Let the bar cool completely before wrapping. Wrap it while it’s still warm and you’ll seal in condensation, which defeats the purpose. Cool first, wrap second.
  • Store wrapped bars in an airtight container. A lidded box or a sealed bag adds a second barrier. Drop in a food-safe silica gel sachet to soak up whatever moisture sneaks in.
  • Keep soap in air-conditioned or dehumidified space. If you make soap regularly in Singapore, a small dehumidifier in your work area earns its keep fast.
  • Reach for a low-sweat base when you can. Some suppliers sell bases formulated to sweat less, often with a bit less glycerin. You trade a touch of clarity for far fewer droplets, which is a fair deal if you’re selling.
  • Go easy on watery add-ins. If a bar keeps sweating no matter what, look at how much fragrance, colour, or liquid extract you’re adding and pull it back.

For a class or a workshop batch, the routine we teach is: pour, cool fully, wrap immediately, box it up. Bars that go straight from the mould into film and into a sealed box almost never sweat, even here.

What to do if the soap has already sweated

Don’t panic and don’t throw the bar out. Sweating usually doesn’t harm the soap at all.

Wipe each bar dry with a clean, lint-free cloth or a paper towel. Let it sit for a short while in an air-conditioned room so the surface fully dries, then wrap it tightly straight away. Once it’s sealed off from the air, it stays dry. The only time to be more careful is if the bars sat wet and stacked against each other for days, since a persistently damp surface can start to look dull or develop a film. Catch it early and a wipe-and-wrap fixes it.

Why this matters if you sell or teach

For a hobbyist, a sweaty bar is a minor annoyance you can wipe off. For anyone selling handmade soap, it’s a real problem. Customers read those droplets as “spoiled” or “cheap,” even though the bar is perfectly good. Labels smudge and peel. Shrink wrap fogs up. A market display that looked crisp in the morning can look tired and damp by afternoon, and that impression is hard to undo once a buyer has formed it.

People want to make soap as gifts or to sell at markets, and the difference between a bar that looks professional and one that looks like it’s melting often comes down to nothing more than wrapping it correctly and storing it dry. It’s a small habit that protects hours of work.

Sweating isn’t a sign you’ve done something wrong. It’s glycerin doing its job in a country that happens to have the perfect climate for it. Once you understand that the droplets are just humidity pulled from the air, the fix becomes obvious: give the glycerin nothing to drink. Cool your bars fully, wrap them tight, store them dry, and keep them out of big temperature swings.
